Vermont Winners at Good Food Foundation Awards

Last week the San Francisco-based Good Food Foundation recognized several Vermont makers at their 2021 awards ceremony honoring the country’s top crafters of food and drink. In fact, Vermont was ranked 5th on the list of states with the greatest number of awardees. So you know, the Good Food Foundation’s mission is to “celebrate, connect, empower and leverage the passionate and engaged, yet often overlooked, players in the food system who are driving towards tasty, authentic and responsible food in order to humanize and reform our American food culture.” We support this platform with what might be seen as an excess of enthusiam, but we love good food and are always on the hunt for unique, small-batch, local and hand-crafted products. In no particular order here are a few of our personal favorites among the many winners:

Babette’s Table in Waitsfield produces an exceptional line of charcuterie and their Finocchiona salami was singled out for an award this year. Erika Lynch, the owner and butcher of Babette’s Table, uses high quality, local pork from family farms. Her fermenting and curing methods were learned during an apprenticeship in Gascony, France and everything is made by hand. Sold throughout New England and beyond, find a source here.

Because you'll need a cheese for that charcuterie platter, Spring Brook Farm's latest award winner is Ashbrook, a French Morbier-style cheese. Spring Brook Farm is a traditional dairy farm located in Reading, Vermont. It covers 1,000 acres and is home to a herd of 100 registered Jersey cows. The farm is committed to sustainability and the local community. Visit their online shop because we also love the alpine-style Tarentaise.

Burlington's All Souls Tortilleria hand makes the best corn tortilla's we've ever tasted - and we go through a lot as tacos and enchilada's feature prominantly in our kitchen rotation, particularly during ski season. All Souls uses locally-grown, organic heirloom corn and the traditional process of stone-grinding to produce the masa that is pressed into tortillas. Mad River Distillers of Warren, which ferments, distills and bottles all of its spirits in Vermont from local and fair trade ingredients, received an award for their Revolution Rye. The rye whiskey is fermented from local and organic rye and specifically distilled to bring out its delicate nuances. MRD describes it as "earthy and peppery with hints of walnut, berry and tropical spice." A must visit is their Burlington tasting room which is currently taking limited reservations and offers curbside pick-up, or have something shipped to you from one of their distributors because if you think like us, there is nothing better than a Manhattan on a cold, winter's night.

Lastly, Republic of Vermont, is a small, family-run apiary and sugar house, and their unheated, raw wildflower honey is a favorite here on toast, in hot tea and with smelly cheese. Republic is dedicated to sustainable forest management and protecting the ecosystem and, unlike the majority of commercial apiaries in the United States, does not treat their bees with chemicals, miticides or antibiotics. And Republic's maple syrup - boiled, filtered and bottled by hand - is certified organic. Its complex flavor and aroma is attributed to the high elevation of the mountain sugarbush and quality soil that produces an unusually sweet sap.
